Narrowing down one of the most beloved genres of movies, the beloved science fiction, isn’t impossible though it sure was just as difficult as it was entertaining. With so many films deserving recognition for their ingenious plots, great acting or great effects. Instead it has been narrowed down to the top five that encompasses everything a top-notch sci-fi movie should.

5. “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”

This movie marks the second in the series released, by George Lucas and it was directed by the talented Irvin Kershner to be the darkest of all the Star Wars films. It offers the viewer a nail-biting plot as Luke discovers his true heritage, betrayal from friends, and an uncertain fate will await Hans Solo.

4. “Alien”

The first in its series the movie, by Ridley Scott brings a mix of sci-fi with horror in this futuristic film that looks more like Armageddon in space. For the new viewer this movie will add killer suspense, an alien that uses humans as a host, and a stellar cast to bring the movie home.

3. “Star Wars: A New Hope”

Like many films before it, the first is always best. “Star Wars” isn’t any different as George Lucus gives us the first insight into his world. Action, adventure, special effects never seen before, machinery like AT-AT or light sabers and terms like Jedi grace the screen.

2. “2001: A Space Odyssey”

Back in 1968, Stanley Kubrick releases this stellar film about the year 2001 in space and beyond. Astronauts find existence of an alien race, in the presence of a monolith, that will change the world forever.

1. “Blade Runner”

Another Ridley Scott hit, this film flashes forward to 2019, and shows us Los Angeles as an anti-utopia. Shortly after you’re introduced to Rick Deckard – the blade runner, and his newest mission to track down genetically engineered robots.
